Sony apparently patents the cover of the PlayStation 5

Apparently, Sony already has a patent related to the cover of the PlayStation 5, so that other companies can’t easily sell custom covers to users. The PlayStation 5 is now one of the best-selling consoles of the latest generation. In addition to the brand that so many people like, the shape is also quite unique and looks futuristic.

Currently, among gamers, making a gaming console more personal is like a culture. A third party also made a PlayStation 5 cover with a more attractive pattern to gamers, especially launching a black cover. However, Sony has sued many companies that try it. They say what the companies are doing is illegal.

As it turned out, this was not an empty claim. Because The Verge (November 23) reports that Sony has patented a black PS5 cover at the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO). Interestingly, some documentation was also found that was leaked by Matt MacLaurin, Sony’s former VP of UX design at PlayStation. He said the Japanese company had prepared a black PS5, controller, and Pulse 3D Audio headset.

Some smaller companies, such as PlateStation5, CustomizeMyPlates, and others have closed their business and refunded their pre-ordered users. However, CustomizeMyPlates returned in early 2021 and is still selling custom covers. On the other hand, DBrand is currently still selling a matte black cover which is not the same as Sony’s patent.

In fact, they had previously sued Sony regarding this matter. However, because there was a legal threat behind it, DBrand had time to stop selling it. They exchanged it for a different pattern and carried out a marketing campaign that mocked Sony’s lawyers.
