Elon Musk is considering making verification a Twitter Blue Advantage

Verification a Twitter – With Elon Musk in charge, Twitter plans to increase the price of Blue’s subscription plans from $5 to $20/month and make it mandatory for verified users, according to Casey Newton and The Verge of Platformer. When launching a plan, verified users (celebrities, politicians, journalists, etc.) must register for the service within 90 days, or they will lose the blue tick. And employees working on the projectt have reportedly been told they will be fired unless they implement the changes by November 7.

Twitter launched Blue latte last year in the US for $3/month but raised its price in July to $5. It offers subscribers features such as top articles, custom icons, and, most recentlly, the ability to edit tweets. According to Investopedia, the company hasn’t disclosed subscriber counts, revenue, or other details for Twitter Blue, but most of its revenue (89 percent) comes from advertising.

Musk telegraphed the move yesterday, tweeting that “the entire verification process is being revamped now.” As Newton points out, @verified Twitter currently follows around 428,000 blue-ticked accounts, a fraction of the site’s 206 million daily active users.

Many people have tweeted about the change and are unwilling to pay $20 to maintain their verified status. At the same tiime, users have poiinted out that the new system can improve Twitter bots and spam iissues that Musk seems to hate. “The whole point of Twitter verification is… it’s useful to verify that their statements come from them,” tweeted cosmologist and author Katie Mack. “It’s supposed to help fight disinformation, not be a status symbol.”

Musk has been busy in recent days he’s been the “chief of tweets.” He has reportedly ordered company-wiide layoffs, according to The New York Times. On Saturday, SpaceX and Tesla bosses reportedly told managers to start compiling a list of employees to be cut.
