The hackers who used the REvil ransomware asked Acer to redeem the data they held hostage for 50 million USD. The hackers are returning to carry out ransomware attacks on several large companies. REvil, ransomware from one of the well-known hackers who managed to break into the company. Acer was also asked to prepare a ransom of USD50 million if they want their data back.
Engadget (21/5) reports that hackers may use a security hole from a vulnerability in Microsoft Exchange to break into corporate networks. This is one of the highest ransom amounts for a hostage ransomware event. The hackers have also given a time limit for Acer to pay the ransom until 28 March. Hackers have also posted several captured images of evidence related to the files they got on the dark web.
Acer has yet to admit that they have been attacked by hackers using ransomware. They have just reported to the law enforcement authorities the existence of an “abnormal situation” in their company.
Until now, it is still unknown whether Acer’s plan is related to the news. It is still unknown what hackers have taken and how much potential they have when they sell the data claimed to belong to Acer.
